Huge News – Federal judge strikes down HUD’s homelessness policy shift

In previous months, President Trump has been acting to reduce the power of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which is a massive tool in the fight against homelessness. His HUD would have limited resources for permanent housing and shifted the focus to temporary housing and services. U.S. District Judge Mary S. McElroy for the District of Rhode Island (who was appointed by Trump) decided that the proposed policy changes, an intentional move away from previous “housing first” policies, would be “arbitrary and capricious,” as they would take away aid from those who are currently recipients. Trump’s HUD maintains that it will continue to try to shift to actions it believes will allow it to stop “permanently warehousing the homeless at exorbitant taxpayer cost while ignoring root causes” (quote from a HUD spokesperson).

What do you think about the ruling? It’s a big win for Housing First, but it seems like these attacks will not let up.
