Today marks the one-year anniversary of Trump’s Executive Order on homelessness.

What exactly was it and how has it affected homeless policy in the country?

On July 24th, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order meant to tackle the homelessness crisis, titled “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets.” The order state that its purpose is to tackle “endemic vagrancy, disorderly behavior, sudden confrontations, and violent attacks have made our cities unsafe.” But has it actually led to positive change for the homeless population in America or used the framing of ‘homeless violence being the real problem’ to further demonize and exploit the homeless?

Most leading organizations argue it has indeed proven disastrous for the homeless. The following list is sourced from the National Homelessness Law Center:
“[The order’s failures include:]

• Attempting to rewrite HUD’s funding guidelines to pressure communities into complying with ideological mandates rather than investing in proven solutions to homelessness, like housing and support. If implemented, these solutions would push at least 97,000 people into homelessness 
• Directing the VA and DOJ to pursue institutionalization and guardianships to strip rights from homeless people, including homeless veterans 
• Instructing HHS to retreat from life-saving mental health and substance use programs and invest in failed policies 
• Ordering federal law enforcement to take over Washington, DC with the stated objective of targeting homeless people 
• Encouraging states to pursue increasingly extreme anti-homeless policies, including a proposed homeless detention camp in Utah and a law that includes forced labor for homeless people in Louisiana “

Pretty damning. Personally, it’s infuriating the way that this administration has handled homelessness policy. Let us all hope the policy takes a change for the better, but in the meantime, we’ll do all we can do. Leave your comments below. What do you think?
