Mayor Katie Wilson’s homelessness platform in her 2025 campaign centered on opening 4,000 new emergency housing and shelter units in four years, pairing them with wrap‑around services, and addressing unsheltered homelessness as a public health and moral crisis.

This all sounded great. However, she’s recently given some pretty distressing news. That original promise of 1000 beds every year has since been rolled back to 960 beds over two years due to a “budget deficit.”

For someone who’s the mayor of a city with 11751 homeless people, I feel like it should be a little bit higher on her list of priorities. For homeless people on the West coast, where housing costs are through the roof, shelters are a much-needed lifeline. I don’t know how the mayor of a city like that can’t have homelessness top of mind.
